Over the past year, Tenth Ward Distilling Company has experienced some incredible growth, including adding a new location on Patrick Street, signing on with their first distributor and developing their very-soon-to-be-open Cocktail Lab. A few weeks ago, Sarah (our founder and Chief Eating Officer) had the chance to see all of the progress that has been made on their new retail and event space and sample a little bit of what’s to come from the Cocktail Lab when it officially opens on July 13.
First we were treated to a tour and tasting from Tenth Ward’s founder, Monica Pearce. Afterwards we took a tour of the Whiskey Hall upstairs that is now available to rent for weddings and events. (It can accommodate up to 150 people.) See a photo of the space here.
While we were in the Whiskey Hall, Tenth Ward’s neighbor, Maxwell’s Kitchen treated us all to some tastes from their menu including the Four Grain Salad, French Onion Grilled Cheese and Beetstrami Sandwich.
Then it was time for Mark, the head distiller at Tenth Ward and former mixologist, to demonstrate the kind of cocktails that will be coming out of the Lab once it’s open to the public. First up was the Rumination - now known as the Hemp Cat. Made with Tenth Ward’s new Genever, matcha syrup, fresh lime juice and CBD oil. It’s refreshing, tart and between the spirit and the CBD, you’ll be feeling as cool as a cat after sipping.
The Rumination/Hemp Cat is on the left in the photo above. The other cocktail pictured is the Absinthe Frappe. Tenth Ward is currently the only distillery in Maryland making an absinthe and if you’re into unique drinks, it’s something you have to try. The Frappe is light and perfect for summer.
The next time you find yourself strolling on Patrick Street, a stop at Tenth Ward Distilling Company is highly recommended. You can learn about their distilling process, imagine a future event in their elegant whiskey hall, get a taste of their exceptional spirits and after July 13, sip on a special cocktail or two. And since you’re here, we can let you in on a little secret, we may be working with them on something new ourselves. More info to come on that very soon.
